The Council has supported free festive parking initiatives for a number of years, and the weekend offer, which was first introduced in 2017, followed feedback from local businesses.

Traders asked about the scheme in early 2018 felt that the free parking offer encouraged people to stay longer in the city, with 84% saying they felt that it had a positive impact on their business.

Councillor Angus Forbes, Convener of the Environment & Infrastructure Committee, said: “The introduction of free Saturday parking in Council-run car parks last year was a positive move, which has been warmly welcomed by local traders. There is no doubt that shopping habits are changing, and if incentives like this can encourage people to ditch online retailers in favour of exploring the fantastic range of local businesses that we have to offer in Perth and its surrounding towns, then this is something which has to be of value to the local economy.”

Free parking will apply on Saturdays and Sundays throughout December 2018 in all Council-run car parks throughout Perth and Kinross.
