British Gas have been hiding cheap deals from its customers it has emerged.

According to Mirror Online, it could save £200 per year, per customer.

Under an agreement with Sainsbury’s, British Gas provides a separate gas and electricity tariff, which carries the supermarket logo.

At £999 a year, the fixed price Sainsbury’s Energy tariff is £185 cheaper than an almost identical British Gas deal of £1,184 a year.

But the rules don’t apply to the British Gas agreement with Sainsbury’s because it is branded as a separate deal - even though British Gas provides the supermarket with call centre staff and sales teams.

British Gas’s 11 million customers will have to wait until next December when new rules announced by regulator Ofgem mean they will be automatically told about the cheaper prices.

A spokeswoman for British Gas said: “The Sainsbury’s Energy tariff is a no frills service quite different from the one at British Gas."
