Lifesaving dogs needed to become blood donors in Perth

Pet Blood Bank UK is appealing for dogs in Perth to step forward as blood donors to help save the lives of other dogs in need.

Fair City Vets in Perth is one of the charity’s host venues and will hold its next donation session on Sunday 7 September. The service operates much like the human blood bank, collecting donations from dogs across the UK and supplying lifesaving blood to veterinary practices nationwide.

Each donation can help up to four other dogs, and the blood is available to any canine across the UK should they require it.

To be eligible, dogs must:

The donation itself takes just 5–10 minutes, though owners should allow 35–40 minutes for the full appointment. Dogs receive a health check from a Pet Blood Bank vet, plenty of treats and fuss, and a goody bag with a toy to take home.

Negative blood type is in high demand as it can be used in emergencies for any dog, but only 30% of dogs have it. Breeds more likely to have this type include German Shepherds, Dobermanns, Flat and Curly Coated Retrievers, Greyhounds, Lurchers, Boxers, Old English Sheepdogs, and Weimaraners.
