Liz Truss will be officially the next prime minister on Tuesday once she has met the queen in Aberdeenshire.

Pete Wishart, MP for Perth and North Perthshire, has responded to the news that Liz Truss has become the new Conservative leader and UK Prime Minister.

Pete Wishart said: “It comes as no surprise to anyone that Liz Truss has won the leadership contest, making her the 9th Prime Minister Scotland hasn’t voted for since 1955.

“Although, it is worth noting that she only won 47% of the total electorate, which would render her victory invalid if she applied the same principles as her deplorable plan for a new referendum bill.

“It won’t take long to tell what kind of Prime Minister she will be, but if she leads in the same way she campaigned, the UK can expect the rich to get richer while ordinary households face being plunged into poverty. And in Scotland, we can expect our democratically elected leader to be ignored, and the powers of its government to be seized.”

Liz Truss won 57.4% of the Conservative leadership vote.
