New recycling bins for European Week for Waste Reduction

Perth & Kinross Council is installing new, temporary recycling bins to collect electric and electronic waste as part of the European Week for Waste Reduction, from 22 November until 18 December.

People can deposit unwanted, old or broken small electrical goods and electronic equipment in the recycling bins, which will be installed in accessible locations across Perth and Kinross. The items that are collected will be recycled locally at Viridor on Shore Road in Perth.

Councillor Alan Grant, Environment Convenor, said: “There is a whole range of resources that can be stripped out for reuse or recycling from even a tiny electrical item like a phone charger or an iPod.  In your kettle at home there is steel, copper, plastics, circuit boards and metals, which are all valuable resources.

“Waste from electrical goods and electronic equipment is one of the fastest growing types of waste in Europe. These temporary recycling collection bins will encourage everyone to save unwanted electrical items from landfill.”

The average UK household throws away 3.3 tonnes of electrical equipment in a lifetime, ranging from kettles and toasters to hair straighteners, power tools and children's toys.

The European Week for Waste Reduction takes place every year in November to encourage people across Europe to reduce their waste that goes to landfill.

Temporary Small-WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Collection Containers will be in place between Saturday 22 November and Thursday 18 December at: Loch Leven library Strathearn community campus library Breadalbane community campus library Pitlochry library Blairgowrie library Coupar Angus library North Inch community campus library AK Bell library Pullar House Reception on Kinnoull Street in Perth Live Active Rodney Bell's Sports Centre Live Active Letham Dewars Centre Perth Leisure Pool In addition, there are permanent Small-WEEE Collection Banks at the Wheel Inn in Scone, on Rannoch Road in Letham, at the Crown Inn Wynd Recycling Point in Auchterarder, and at Auchterarder Park Recycling Point in Auchterarder. Large and small electrical and electronic equipment can also be taken to any of the Council’s nine Recycling Centres across Perth and Kinross.
