Hair stylist Sara-Jane McBride from Perth’s John Gillespie hair salon, is one of eight UK volunteers to travel to the SOS children’s Village in Kolkata, India, to teach disadvantaged young people the skill of hairdressing.

Shaping Futures is a social initiative set up by Schwarzkopf Professional in partnership with SOS Children’s Villages, and Sara will teach 30 students the art of hairdressing in order to help less privileged young people create a career for themselves once they have left the village.

As part of the initiative, each volunteer must raise £3000 to cover the cost of all flights and accommodation, and Sara’s latest fundraiser has definitely helped her on her way. Held at 63 Tay Street, Perth, Sara rounded up friends, family and clients to have a charity dinner and raffle raising over £1,200.

Sara says: “The night was a huge success! We raised a great amount of money for Shaping Futures and had an amazing night—here’s to the next fundraiser!”

Sara is joining in a car boot sale on the 21st of September, and has also organised a steak night on the 4th of October, a salon day on the 12th and, as well as all that, taking part in the Men’s Health survival  of the Fittest challenge on the 19th.

The Shaping Futures team will travel to Kolkata in October this year, if you’d like to donate to Shaping Futures, please visit John Gillespie in Perth or call the salon on 01738 624068.
