A report published on a recent inspection of St John’s RC Academy and Nursery Class in Perth by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate (HMIe) highlights many strengths in the work of the school.

Particular strengths identified in the latest report include the children and the young people’s behaviour and positive attitudes to learning. Pupils across the nursery, primary and secondary stages were found to be polite, welcoming and well-behaved.

Wide-ranging partnerships were also found to be enhancing pupils’ learning and achievement. The report notes that the development of the all-through school within the community campus has meant a period of significant change for the whole school community but throughout this period pupils’ achievements have continually improved. The report also identifies that young people also have a strong voice in the school through various councils and committees which contribute to school improvement.

Teachers were found to be providing good opportunities for children and young people to work on projects which link different subject areas together. The aim of this type of learning is to make it engaging and relevant to young people.

Aspects of innovative practice were identified by the inspectors during their visit to the school and plans are in place for the inspectorate to work with the Council and the Academy to record these examples of innovation and share them more widely.

As a result of these positives, HMIe will not make any further evaluative visits to St John’s RC Academy in connection with this inspection.

Councillor Bob Band, Convener of Lifelong Learning welcomed the report: “I am pleased that the inspectors found clear evidence of good practice at St John’s RC Academy. Everyone at the school is to be praised for working to enhance the quality of education provided and for their commitment to continuous improvement by ensuring the delivery of consistently high quality learning and teaching that meets young people’s varying needs and abilities.”
