An operation to tackle football related violence and anti-social behaviour has been carried out by Police Scotland today [Tuesday 27 January] in Aberdeen and Dundee.
Overall, around 50 officers were involved in the operation today and 12 people have been detained in police custody and the campaign is expected to continue over the next few weeks.
Officers from Aberdeen City Division have worked alongside colleagues in Tayside Division to carry out today’s enforcement activity as well as with Aberdeen Football Club and Dundee United Football Club.
A total of 12 men have been charged and will appear in court at a later date.
In Aberdeen those charged are aged – 17, 18, 18, 20, 21, 21, 25, 48
In Dundee those charged are aged – 17, 18, 19 and 41.
Chief Inspector Murray Main said: “Football related violence has reduced over the years thanks to in part to the excellent partnerships between Police and football clubs. However there remains a small element intent on causing antisocial behaviour.
“The actions of these individuals will not be tolerated and there is no place for disorderly behaviour in our towns and cities.
“We will continue to work with partners, including colleagues in other areas of Police Scotland, to keep people safe.”
Chief Superintendent Eddie Smith, Tayside Divisional Commander said,
“This morning’s operation to tackle football related violence and anti-social behaviour went extremely well, with four individuals in Dundee being detained in connection with these offences.
“One of the many benefits of Police Scotland is that operations such as these can be co-ordinated across neighbouring Divisions in order that offenders who engage in disorder can be targeted quickly and effectively.
“In doing so, this sends out a clear message that, across the country, Police Scotland will not tolerate violence, disorder or anti-social behaviour at football matches. We want to ensure that football fixtures are safe and enjoyable for all those attending. We would reassure our communities that our officers will continue to take positive action to target individuals who engage in anti-social or violent behaviour and bring them before the courts.”
