UK Government urged to help Dnipro Kids Appeal charity as Perth waits to take on 34 children from Ukraine

MP for Perth and North Perthshire, Mr Pete Wishart, on Thursday raised the case of constituent Steve Carr’s charity in parliament.

MP for Perth and North Perthshire, Mr Pete Wishart, on Thursday raised the case of constituent Steve Carr’s charity in parliament.

Mr Carr is chairman of Dnipro Kids Appeal, a charity that runs an orphanage in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro. He is currently evacuating 34 children from the orphanage to Poland, but there is uncertainty about whether these children will be able to be brought to Scotland due to current UK visa requirements.

MP for Perth and North Perthshire, Mr Pete Wishart said: “I raised Steve’s case in the chamber to illustrate the desperate need to waive all visa requirements for Ukrainians. Steve doesn’t anticipate any difficulty getting across the Polish border, but what he doesn’t know, even with the Home Secretary’s announcement that Ukrainians can apply for visas online, is what happens next and how he will get these children to Scotland.

“There are places for them in Perthshire, and they will be supported by the local community there.

“These are children who are traumatised and exhausted after weeks of seeing their country invaded and bombed. It is our humanitarian duty to set aside all remaining bureaucracy to allow these children to get here, and I will continue to call for this to happen as a matter of upmost urgency.”
