An eight-year-old from Perth, who can’t swim but saved a boy from drowning in July 2021, has reached the final 10 selection stage in the Amplifon Awards for Brave Britons 2022 Young Hero category.

Tierney Batt rescued Cayden Paterson, 12, from the River Tay at Moncreiffe Island, Perth, after she had seen him struggling in the water. His cries for help went unheard by adults so Tierney entered the water.

The young hero kept Cayden’s head above water until some passersby pulled them both onto the riverbank.  Tierney reached the selection stage out of about 50 nominations chosen by the public from around the UK.

Four finalists will be selected in each category and the winner will be announced at an awards ceremony on Tuesday, October 11. Falklands War hero Simon Weston chairs the judging panel and BBC TV and radio presenter Rachel Burden will make the awards.

Amplifon is a leading global hearing specialist with 107 stores across the UK.
