A nature-focused outdoor learning programme has marked its first anniversary with over 400 children from across Perth and Kinross taking part in a wide variety of activities designed to inspire environmental awareness and outdoor skills.
The Wild Journey initiative, developed by Perth and Kinross Countryside Trust (PKCT), has delivered more than 30 nature-based experiences to 11 schools and community groups in 2025 alone. Activities have included everything from litter picking and bug hunting to shelter building and creating nature collages.
The free, structured programme aims to reconnect young people with the natural world through a hands-on approach. It offers downloadable “how-to” guides on the PKCT website, enabling teachers and group leaders to run sessions independently, with expert-led sessions available upon request.
Catherine Leatherland from PKCT said:
“It is fantastic to see so many classes and groups getting involved with Wild Journey during its first year. From a community litter pick in Muirton in May with pupils from Riverside Primary, to a campfire with the Scouts in June—it’s heartening to see young people spending time outside and appreciating the benefits that nature brings to our planet and to our own wellbeing.”
Schools including Aberuthven, Kinloch Rannoch, and Riverside primaries are currently working towards bronze certificates, which are awarded for completing two of the programme’s six activity streams. A spirit of friendly rivalry has developed, with pupils eager to be featured on the programme’s online wall of fame.
“There has been some friendly competition between schools vying to become the first group to earn their certificates,” added Catherine. “Seeing the enthusiasm of the classes is infectious, and I wish them all good luck in their adventures.”
PKCT chairperson Stephen Woollard praised the impact of the programme:
“In only its first year, Wild Journey has managed to reach people of all ages and stages across the length and breadth of the region. There’s always something to learn about nature and our environment—whether in a park, garden or deep in the countryside. We hope this project continues to support young people, their parents and carers in appreciating our natural surroundings.”
The project has been made possible thanks to funding from The Gannochy Trust.
