Tesco Bank and the National Galleries of Scotland issued a final call for entries to the 2014 Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools, with schools across the country already entering pupils’ work in great numbers.

The competition couldn’t be easier to enter, all schools need to do is pop to nationalgalleries.org, download the relevant category for your child/class and then get painting!

The deadline for submission is Friday 2nd May 2014.

The 2014 Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools invites children and young people from nursery age to S2 from schools across Scotland to enter artworks on a series of themes that relate to Scotland’s national art collection.

The National Galleries of Scotland’s eleventh competition has six categories for children to enter, with art submitted from every local authority in Scotland. Last year alone, more than 10,000 children submitted their artwork to the competition and they hope that this year will see entries exceeding over 55,000 since the competition began.

The Art Competition for Schools was created to inspire young people to use the collection at the National Galleries to respond to their surroundings, tell stories and develop their own visual and practical art skills.

Works from the National Galleries of Scotland’s collection at the Scottish National Gallery, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and Scottish National Portrait Gallery will be used to inspire young artists, including works by Ann Redpath, Sir Stanley Spencer and Roy Lichtenstein.

Over the last 12 months, Tesco Bank has facilitated a series of twelve National Galleries of Scotland workshops in six schools across Scotland, from Aberdeenshire to Fife and Perth & Kinross to Dumfries & Galloway.

Linda McLelland, Playfair Education Co-ordinator at the National Galleries of Scotland said:

“Each and every year we are amazed by the very impressive standard of work that is entered from
all over Scotland. It’s so encouraging to see how school children take inspiration from the national
collection and mix it with their own imagination to produce such fantastic works.”

This is the third year Tesco Bank has partnered with the National Galleries of Scotland to support
this competition.  Adele Mills, community investment manager, Tesco Bank, added:

“Last year’s competition was a huge success with a record-breaking 11,222 talented youngsters entering. We are sure this year will follow suit and are greatly looking forward to seeing entries from across all six of the categories.”
