The charity Beautiful Perth has successfully secured funding from Perth & Kinross Council’s 2014 Community Challenge Fund to erect four banners promoting Perth as well as the charity itself at key roadside sites on the four main routes into the city.
The sites are Dundee Road (just past the City of Perth sign); Glasgow Road (at Oakbank Road corner); Crieff Road (opposite McDiarmid Park) and Edinburgh Road (at the junction with Gleneagles Road).
The funding comes as part of Perth & Kinross Council’s ambitious legacy programme for 2014 in recognition of the year of Homecoming, and to maximise the opportunities for our area from key events including the Queen’s Baton Relay, Glasgow Commonwealth Games and as host to the first Ryder Cup to be played on Scottish soil for 40 years.
The key legacy themes of Active, Learning, Community and Economic have been chosen to reflect the national legacy priorities set out by the Scottish Government. A wide range of projects and events will be delivered across our area during 2014, building a legacy of active, involved communities with thriving economies and improved infrastructure. Communities are being encouraged to join in the celebrations and to ensure we make 2014 a year to remember in Perth and Kinross.
Chairman of Beautiful Perth John Summers said: “This is an important and exciting year for Perth. As well as the Homecoming, the Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup we’re also in the UK finals for Britain in Bloom. I’m delighted we have secured this grant so we can show our pride in the City and leave a legacy for the future. Our banners will greet visitors for years to come, promoting a range of activities in Perth as well as the continuing work of Beautiful Perth.”
The Legacy 2014 Community Challenge Fund was created by Perth and Kinross Council to help communities in Perth and Kinross to take part in the exciting events taking place in Scotland in 2014.
It forms part of the Council’s Legacy programme, ‘Take Part, Take Pride, Take Place’. Support is available to constituted community groups for projects that celebrate The 2014 Ryder Cup, the Commonwealth Games and Queen’s Baton Relay or Homecoming, including local sports events, cultural celebrations or artistic performance, local festivals and projects to decorate or enhance local communities.
Leader of the Council, Councillor Ian Miller commented: “This is the ideal time for a project such as the Beautiful Perth banner initiative to be launched. 2014 will see a number of high profile events such as the Ryder Cup taking place locally and these banners will both celebrate and highlight, when the eyes of the world are upon us, that Perth and Kinross continues is a place where local communities thrive and people want to live, work and visit.“
