Police in Carnoustie are carrying out enquiries after a much-loved family cat was shot and killed by someone who appears to have used an air rifle.

The fit and healthy seven-year-old female tabby cat was fatally wounded some time between 6pm on Thursday (May 8) when she was let out of the house and 1pm on Saturday (May 10) when her body was found by her worried owner.

The cat was found on a grassy embankment on the south side of Barry Buddon Burn near to the footpath that runs alongside houses on Macdonald Smith Drive, a short distance from home.

Its concerned owners had been looking for it on Thursday and Friday, before making the tragic discovery on Saturday.

SSPCA officials later discovered an air gun pellet lodged in the beloved pet.

Police Scotland have been carrying out house to house enquiries in the area and would appeal to any who has information that could assist their investigation to call them on 101, or speak to any officer.

Information can also be provided anonymously via the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
