SSE’s latest batch of 23 Scottish based apprentices and technical skills trainees were officially welcomed into the organisation today by Perth and North Perthshire MP Pete Wishart.
Since 2017 SSE has hired more than 1,100 apprentices across the U.K and a total training investment of £88m or £80,000 per recruit.
Pete Wishart MP said: “SSE is an important employer in my constituency and the investment it puts into each and every new apprentice shows its commitment to the local area and to these new recruits.
“It was a real pleasure to be asked along to help welcome the apprentices into the training programme and I wish them all the very best with their future careers.”
John Stewart, SSE Director of Human Resources, said investing in apprentices and trainees is vital for the future of the energy industry.
He said: “It’s always a very special day in our calendar to officially welcome the new apprentices and TSTs to SSE.
“SSE invests on average around £80,000 per trainee. This investment is vital as half of the energy sector’s workforce can leave or retire by 2023.
“SSE’s apprentice and TST programmes are fantastic ways into a highly skilled and varied career within the energy industry with 95% of SSE’s recruits staying with us after they’ve served their time. We’re delighted to have this team joining our ranks this week.”
It puts trainees through foundation degrees as well as giving them work experience across the business. Graduates then join a two-year rotational programme to develop their skills and experience, SSE said.
