Local Perthshire musician Mhairi MacKinnon is set to perform alongside a host of the most revered artists and rising stars within the Scottish folk scene to officially launch and live stream Vincular, Ron Jappy’s highly acclaimed debut album which features Mhairi on fiddle.
Mhairi’s versatile yet graceful style has seen her work with an array of Scottish musicians; obtaining many gigs as a session musician as well as her playing appearing on a range of albums and EPs.
The online album launch, that will take place online on Saturday 13 March, is the first chance for audiences to enjoy a live performance of Vincular, performed by a host of Scottish musicians. Viewers will also be able to watch back and enjoy the performance at their leisure until 10pm on Monday 15 March.
To ensure the online event is accessible to all, tickets are being sold on a ‘pay what you can’ basis with a minimum donation of £1. Donors will receive a complimentary digital programme and exclusive information about the music and artists involved when they purchase their ticket.
The album’s title Vincular reflects Ron Jappy’s role as an accompanist; to bind, link and connect. It was essential that Ron selected a group of artists that complimented his innovative approach to creating music, with every musician not just recording parts but having the opportunity to add their own creative flare. The result of this was an album of unique perspective.
Mhairi can’t wait to be a part of the live launch, she said: “I am really looking forward to bringing this music to life in a live setting. Being able to perform alongside all of the incredible musicians who put their all into this album will be so rewarding. There’s something in this album for every listener so I know the live stream event will be hugely enjoyable for every viewer.”
Ron Jappy, who wrote the album, said: “I love accompanying music and I love working with others, it’s something I’m really passionate about. The role of an accompanist is crucial to the success of any performance; I have to support and enhance the performer and help deliver what they are trying to convey. It is often an exciting and creative process that demands an assured and versatile approach, never overpowering and never detracting from the main message.”
The innovative Ron Jappy & Band will consist of an array of Scotland’s most in-demand folk musicians including Mhairi MacKinnon, dynamic accordionist Grant MacFarlane, Scott Wood from Skerryvore and Scott Wood Band, innovative fiddle player Mhairi MacKinnon, Fat-Suit and Mànran drummer Mark Scobbie, Bass guitarist Simon Philips, BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year Finalist Ainsley Hamill, cellist and one of Scotland’s young rising stars Alice Allen, multi-instrumentalist and singer Lissa Roberston, Barluath’s Alistair Iain Paterson and Fat-Suit’s Fraser Jackson.
The online gig will be presented by Scottish singer, TV & Radio presenter Joy Dunlop and BBC Take the Floor Presenter and member of Mànran, Gary Innes.
The virtual doors to Vincular Live Stream Album Launch will open at 7.30pm with Ron Jappy & Band on stage at 8pm (GMT). The live stream will be available for 48 hours after launch so donors can enjoy the show as many times as they like until Monday 15th March at 10pm (GMT).
