Today (Monday 28th April 2014) will see the official turf-cutting to mark the start of construction for the new Crieff Primary School, relocating the school from existing premises on Commissioner Street to brand new facilities on a site close to the town’s Strathearn Community Campus.

The £14m project forms part of Perth & Kinross Council’s ongoing capital programme of school upgrades and improvements to improve the environment for learning and teaching across the area.

The new primary school and nursery will be complemented by associated facilities including gymnasium, sports pitches, multi-use games area and playground. Biomass boilers will provide heating and hot water and reduce the carbon footprint of the new school.

The Crieff Primary School project will be one of the first in Perth and Kinross to be undertaken under a HubCo Design & Build Development Agreement (DBDA), along with Oakbank Primary School where work will also begin shortly to replace the existing school facilities.

HubCo East Central Scotland is a joint partnership between public and private sector organisations aimed at developing and delivering better local services across East Central Scotland.

BAM commenced work on the site in late March 2014 and it is anticipated that the new school will open its doors in August 2015.

Lifelong Learning Convener, Councillor Bob Band will officially cut the first turf on site today. He said: “This is a significant project to improve education provision in Crieff and follows on from the development of the nearby Strathearn Community Campus. Through the partnership with HubCo we are continuing to make upgrades to our education facilities throughout Perth and Kinross. I am sure pupils and staff are looking forward to starting the 2015/16 school year in a brand-new, modern and high quality environment.”
